Higher Education Loan Program (HELP / HECS)
A government loan to cover the cost of university or higher education fees, repaid through the tax system once your income exceeds a threshold — never charged interest, but indexed to CPI.

What you get
Your fees are deferred and become a HELP debt. You repay through your tax return once your income exceeds ~$54,435/year. No interest is charged but the debt is indexed to CPI on 1 June each year.

How to apply
1. Confirm your course and institution is HELP-approved. 2. Complete a Higher Education Student Enrolment (HESE) form or equivalent at your institution. 3. Submit your TFN to your institution by the census date.
